Don't Judge a Book By It's Cover

We've all heard that saying before right? How there is more to something that meets the eye. Despite that saying, judging a book by it's cover is what lot's of people do. You see a pretty or interesting cover, most likely you will pick up that book to read more about it. I think covers are very important when it comes to presenting a book. It's like if you write a crappy essay and submit it to a university, will they accept you? Most likely not. It's all about first impressions that are very important. Obviously, some covers are going to appeal to certain people rather than others.

There are so many different types of covers a book can have.
A) A cover that's simple yet stunning.
B) A cover that has all this pretty font and graphics and it is stunning.
C) Covers where the focus is on the title.
D) Covers where the focus is on the image. (Ex: A girl's face, a sword, a couple walking)
E) A cover has little hints to what the book may be about
F) Covers where there is a perfect balance between the title text and image.and much more! These are the very common types of covers I see.

My favorite style of covers has to be the simple ones that are yet stunning. All it takes is a small graphic, nice font, good color scheme, AND HOLY MOLY. We have ourselves a beautiful cover. An example is the cover for Eleanor and Park. Not only is it beautiful but it contributes a bit to what the book is about. We have the headphones between them which signifies the mixtapes and you can see Eleanor's red hair and Park's black hair. It doesn't show their face or anything fancy but this is definitely what I would consider to be a beautiful cover.

So what happens if a cover isn't very appealing to you? Either it went through a cover change or you just don't like it. First of all, that should not stop you from reading the book. If you are interested in the book before the cover comes out, then you should still read it. I have read many books that I have enjoyed but had covers I cringed at. I understand that most authors don't get a say in their cover but it's really the publisher's job to get that book selling as well. Anyway, so a book doesn't get a cover you like. You can do a few things to get over that. Either hope the publisher does a cover redesign or order a foreign edition with a different cover. Covers are just an easy way to see what books catch your eyes rather than flipping through each book, it shouldn't cloud your judgement on whether you want to buy it or not if you already know what it's about.

Is it wrong to judge a book by it's cover though? In my opinion, no. If you don't think your browsing experience isn't going to the fullest then go ahead and see whether you want to further look into a book based on title and cover. Say you're in a bookstore looking for new books. The last thing I am going to ever do is read every single synopsis because that would take way too long. You don't want to sit in a competition and watch everyone perform, because that would take too long.

That is why you have auditions, covers are kind of like auditions. Once they grab your attention, all they have to do now is hope you like the rest of the book's act (the synopsis of the book)

Now that you have my opinion, here is what others have to say!

@NextPagePlease_ I probably shouldn't but I judge anyways...covers have to be pretty decent for me to interested in it unless I've heard

@NextPagePlease_ I'm a sucker for a pretty cover, I'll say. :p
— Holly J (@skizzles22) August 20, 2015

@NextPagePlease_ I'm the worst at this. I literally won't read a book if I find the cover unattractive. So rude but I can't help it!

@NextPagePlease_ I don't always, but when I do, it's for s good reason
— Wren (@TheReadingBird) August 20, 2015

@NextPagePlease_ I think that's inevitable. Like really, I'm a sucker for pretty books. But I'll also of course read the summary after that.

@NextPagePlease_ I admit, I'm a sucker for a good cover. I mean, first impressions are everything, right?

@NextPagePlease_ Since I'm really into art, the cover has to be good or I will put off reading the book or I won't read it at all.
— Carina Zepeda (@CariZepeda) August 20, 2015

@NextPagePlease_ I do judge and I'm not ashamed to say it. There is no reason to make a crappy cover. It matters. LOVE great covers.
— Sarah K (@thebooktraveler) August 20, 2015

@NextPagePlease_ It is the cover that gets me to read a blurb but I base my decision on if the blurb sounds interesting or not.

@NextPagePlease_ I've read some great books outside my usual genre because I loved the covers so much. The Winner's Curse...Magonia...

@NextPagePlease_ I judge books by their covers! The person who creates the cover design should try to make the book more appealing.

@NextPagePlease_ Shameless ;) I do it and I don't feel bad. Presentation matters to me.
— Novacaine (@NovaBlogder) August 20, 2015

@NextPagePlease_ I know I shouldn't, but sometimes I do. Pretty covers attract me and/or get my attention. Can't help it sometimes!
— Jessica (@FlytoFiction) August 20, 2015

@NextPagePlease_ I'm drawn to the book by cover - then I read the synopsis to see if I'm interested. So I guess cover image is important!
— Kj - Birds ♥ words (@Birdslovewords) August 20, 2015

@NextPagePlease_ There's like the ones that just grabs you and makes it more interesting.
